Easee on a 3x230 V grid: solar surplus charging after all
On a 3x230 V grid, solar charging through the Easee Equalizer does not work on three phases. Here is how to charge your car on your own solar power with the Easee you already have.
Can it or can't it?
Look up how to charge an Easee on solar surplus and one source says it works on a 3x230 V grid while another says it can't be done. Both are right, but they are talking about different things.
The charger itself works fine on 3x230 V, which is why shops list Easee as "supporting IT grids". Solar charging is something else: it runs through the Easee Equalizer. According to Easee's own help page, that feature works on a TN grid with one or three phases and on an IT grid with one phase, but not on a three-phase IT grid. That is exactly the usual three-phase connection on 3x230 V.
What is a 3x230 V grid?
Most connections in Belgium are 3x400 V: three phases and a neutral. Easee calls that a TN grid. Especially in Brussels, many connections are still 3x230 V without a neutral, which Easee calls an IT grid. If in doubt, your installer will know straight away.
Why 3x230 V makes it harder
You steer a charger in amps. You measure your solar surplus in watts. How many watts one amp is depends on your grid:
| Grid and phases | Power per amp |
|---|---|
| 3x400 V, car charging on three phases | 690 W |
| 3x230 V, car charging on three phases | 398 W |
| One phase, on either grid | 230 W |
Treat a 3x230 V grid as if it were 3x400 V and the car gets over 40 % too little current. And a charger only starts at 6 A. At 690 W per amp that is 4.1 kW: below it nothing happens, while on 3x230 V a car can already charge on three phases from 2.4 kW.
How Novolt solves it
- No Equalizer needed. Novolt reads your digital meter through the P1 port and sees for itself how much power you export.
- The right power per amp. Novolt knows which grid you are on and counts 398 W per amp on three phases, and 230 W on one.
- Adjusted every 30 seconds. Your Easee's current follows your surplus, from 6 A.
- The car ready on time. If the car needs a number of extra kilometres by a set time and the sun falls short, Novolt tops up from the grid. On a dynamic tariff, in the cheapest hours.
- Within your connection. Your main fuse and your peak limit are respected.
Does it really work?
Yes. Novolt steers an Easee on a 3x230 V grid today, alongside an SMA inverter. The car charges on solar surplus there, and the current rises and falls with the sun.
What you need
- An Easee charger: Home, Charge, One, Charge Lite or Charge Up.
- A digital meter with an open P1 port.
- Solar panels with an inverter. The brands Novolt knows are listed under compatible hardware.
- The Novolt box in your meter cupboard.
